Dental Sealants Still Require Attention in Your Child’s Daily Oral Hygiene Routine

The dental sealants painted onto the biting surface of your child’s back teeth by Dr. Christina Sehy VerSchave create a thin film of durable plastic resin to protect them from the bacterial presence of residual food particles and plaque. While this will safely protect the biting surface of your child’s back teeth from cavities, it’s important to note that the sides of the teeth are still vulnerable to tartar buildup and tooth decay.

This means that your son or daughter will need to be diligent about and flossing all of their teeth, twice a day. Make sure they include all of the surfaces of their back teeth, as well as flossing behind their last molar. This not only helps to prevent cavities from forming on the unprotected surfaces, but it also helps to prevent complications caused by gum disease.

Kids should still brush the biting surfaces of their back teeth as well. The resin material is designed to be durable and won’t easily be removed by simple brushing.
